Apartment building fell down in China (12 pics)

Posted in Pictures   29 Jun 2009   / 55077 views

13-storey apartment building collapsed in Chinese city of Shanghai, which was almost finished. It fell without being destroyed, like a domino.
It gives the impression as if the building was razed as a tree and was laid down...
According to the official version, the reason of the building collapsing was the construction of the underground garage and the loose soil.

It missed the next building so closely its almost like they expected them to fall down and left some space just in case.

New way of building, cheaper - flat on the ground then lift it. Takes more space, but it much cheaper.

Something is fishy in this story. Shanghai is VERY short on space - I doubt they could afford to build at such distance between blocks.

I'm civil engineer. Building near river banks is complicated cause of soil conditions. Those guys should consider slab foundation, or just use reinforcing steel in those poles :) And I was afraid of upcoming flood of affordable chineese engineers :>

If I was living in the nearby apartments I would move out.

Hollow concrete piles are designed to have reinforcement and concrete poured into the central core once the pile is in place. The reinforcement is then tied into the strip foundations.

Look at the close-ups of the piles. The concrete and reinforcement has only been placed at the very tops of the piles.

Someone has been cutting costs and deserves to go to prison for a very long time.

Haha i wonder if it landed on anyone... I mean I hope it landed on someone. In fact I would find it really funny if all the contractors were having a family BBQ in the park behind the building admiring their work and showing off, then "oh no godzirra!!" splat... Hilarious I laughed so hard I popped a boner.
