Drug War in Rio de Janeiro (52 pics)

Where would Brazilian drug dealers hide? They would hole up in the most dangerous slums in Rio. This was what Rio de Janeiro policemen reported. So they held a raid on the shantytown of Alemao after they asked drug traffickers to surrender who, of course, refused to give in. Nearly 200 people have been arrested or detained, and more than 96 buses and cars have been burned during this operation in Rio de Janeiro, the city that will host the final match of the 2014 World Cup as well as the 2016 Olympics. Inside this post, you can see the photographs that show the operation itself, the reaction of local residents on a drug war and a house of an alleged drug trafficker that looks luxurious compared to ordinary buildings in the Brazilian favelas.

This triplex house belongs to drug lord Alexander Mendes da Silva. It is located in the Complexo do Alemao slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has a hot tub in the bathroom, a swimming pool on the roof, LCD TVs and air conditioners in each room. But the most unusual decoration of this apartment is a huge Justin Bieber mural on the wall.

Hey guys
im brazilian and live in rio de janeiro
Some points are true
I personally hate to live here.

Bad things: very stupid and corrupt government, the traffic is awful here in rio, most of poor ppl are stupid, idiot and principally dumb. even broadband connection is kinda expensive for most of citizens.

Good things: People's charisma, beaches

Oh, i forgot:
its not a miserable country, but is very unequal.
Its a paradise for rich ppl, but for the poor...
do some search about about public health and transport here in rio (speacially in the downtown, known as "baixada fluminense").
damn, im tired of this place

wonderful place to visit, not to live in

Funny how people comment without knowing anything. I live in Rio, have friends in several favelas and know that things are getting better after the police installs itself inside of them. You may be hearing about those operations for the first time but it started years ago. The police occupies the favela and don't leave after. Things are changing. Of course there are lots of problems everywhere and it's far from being over. But just complaining and accusing the police of doing nothing useful for the population is stupid talk from people which have absolutely no contact with the reality of poor people from Rio.

What's with the arguments, people? Does every internet forum have to have a flame war? Who cares whether or not some country has class? Class isn't even a definable term!
And stop insulting each other's intelligence.
Try to take a less antagonistic tone with each other. You might actually gain something edifying from the conversation.
More ON SUBJECT, I'm glad to see that the druglords have people after them. Scumbags who manipulate and destroy like that and throw illusions over peoples' heads have a very deep Hell to look forward to, whether or not its in the afterlife. Its good to see some reform taking place.

It's about time that the government massively overtakes those "maras" in Brasil.
Think of it, I know of a few places in the state where some governement control would be welcome also.
